Photo Story Workshop puts cameras in the hands of children from an early age.

We teach elementary and middle school children visual storytelling techniques to build voice and promote positive community-led social change. How? Through supplemental arts-based after school learning within transformative community and school climates. Interested partners provide space for the workshop to meet for one-hour weekly during the semester after school, as an in-class arts supplemental program, or a one-day workshop.  There is a nominal per-child fee that will remain constant as we grow. Our priority is to serve communities with a high-quality creative option for children to learn self-expression through photography in their existing learning and creative environments. 

Photo Story Workshop was first piloted in Baltimore at City Neighbors Hamilton (CNH), a public charter elementary school in Northeast Baltimore, with a group of 10 students from 1st and 2nd grades that met weekly through the spring of 2019. The six- and seven-year-olds learned the basics of photography.  They also utilized these tools to support their work on literacy, math, mindfulness, kindness, and teamwork. Each child presented their work, constructively critiqued each other’s images, actively listened, asked questions, edited their images, create storyboards, and mounted a final public exhibition.  2020 MICA UP/START Venture Capital Winner! 

In addition to after-school workshops, Photo Story Workshop hosts a range of photography-skills building trainings for all ages including single-day sessions and week-long summer camps.

Partnerships: We continue to establish partnerships with Baltimore City Public and Charter Schools and community partners for classes! Photo Story Workshop is actively looking for corporate partners to sponsor our work in Baltimore City to keep programs affordable for all students. Please contact us if you would like to learn more.
